The festival of Holi or Phagwah is a celebration of colour and brotherhood. It is customarily celebrated in very high spirits as a harvest festival and is the welcoming of the spring season in India, usually a day after the full moon in March. It is on this occasion that coloured power or coloured water is thrown at each other to break all discriminations and barriers. The Holi festival is the most fun filled event in the Indian Calendar.
Over the years, The Rotherham Culture Group along with the Rotherham Borough Council, One Town One Community, ROAR and others, have been partners with the Bharat Integration Group which is a Rotherham based Indian Woman’s group, and have together held the event at Oakwood Technology College for the past few years with great success.
The Bharat group leader, Gopa Raha says that everyone is invited and hopes that this colourful event brings the people of Rotherham together. The event includes Bollywood style dance, music and Indian food, and of course lots of colour.
